The book to accompany the first series of BFGW Quite enjoyed this book gave a bit insight into the gypsy way of life and explains in details some of their traditions and ways.

I was hoping this book would give me an update on all the people who were filmed on My Big Fat Gypsy Weddings , and also maybe some of what was cut would make it into the book What I got instead was basically the whole show broken down into book form There were a few extras, but nothing like the book leads you to believe I also didn t like the way some of the dialogue was changed to make it easier for the author to add it to the book I noticed this at least a few timesThis book would be great for someone who is interested in the show, but doesn t want to watch the show, or for whatever reason can t watch the show, or if you re like me and are highly addicted to the show

Following the lives of traveller families from the first series of the glamourous documentary television show.So why do traveller girls dress up to nines at social functions compared to settlers who wear conservative dress in pale colours Apparently, there are fewer traveller boys than girls Girls are eager to marry as a stage of maturity Resulting in intense competition between girls But heavy wedding dresses are too hot and painful They leave scars on the hips.Young adults aren t allowed to date on their own Grabbing Irish traveller practice of boys violently abducting girls for an hour or so Girls must play the reluctant victim in public or be shamed.Prejudice of majority settlers against gypsies and travellers Refusal of employment Eviction from hotels Pubs Weddings being ejected, hosts cancel when they learn the race of the guests Free spirits averse to rigid planning Large numbers hundreds can show up for funerals and weddings Settlers move house, the differences are of degree than nature Caravan life.

I picked this up cheap as I thought perhaps it wouldn t appeal to me but I have to say it was a wonderful insight not only into the weddings that were aired on TV but also traveller life and culture You will recognise some of the stories that were on TV, the girl with the mechanical butetrlies and battery packs on her dress, the tearing down of Dale Farm etc but I learnt a lot about the perceptions the gypsies feel we as settled people have about them, how they afford those weddings and why having the biggest, best dress, cake, transport etc is important to them.
