This dual language book contains fifteen short stories, all by different authors, and is an excellent way for the reader unfamiliar with contemporary French literature to become acquainted with authors whose other works might be worth locating and reading I found the book to be refreshing in its variety Only one or two of the authors were ones with whom I had been familiar Of course, I liked some stories better than others, but the general quality was high, the writing good Let me mention some that I particularly liked.Octave Mirbeau s Paysage de foule Crowd Scene is a gripping vignette of mob psychology and ferocity, pealing back the veneer of propriety and revealing bestial vengefulness and anti Semitism In Portrait d Eliane quatorze ans Eliane at Age Fourteen , Valery Larbaud portrays the coming of age and the seething libido of a middle adolescent, life being filled with fantasies than realities Fred Kassak s Iceberg is a short and ambiguous tale with an unexpected twist that is guaranteed to enthrall and delight just who is George, the lover s rival, anyway Le livre et la dent The Book and the Tooth by Pierrette Fleutiaux is a witty and brilliant over the top charade of increasing frenzy, taking the ritual of dealing with a child s lost tooth to its il logical extreme But I could go on and on, almost every story being a source of great enjoyment.Still intent on increasing my facility in the reading of French, I find dual language books a great help in providing vocabulary assistance without the necessity of putting the book aside in order to pick up and fumble through a dictionary As time goes by, most readers will need to rely on the English translation less and less This volume has no independent vocabulary list at the back, as some dual language books do, but this is not a criticism Now I have identified several authors whose other works I want to read.

Interesting, albeit at times strange collection of short stories that transcend culture I liked the translation on the facing page which allowed me to enjoy the stories when I came across unknown vocabulary words.

Dear Jennifer,I have loved and thoroughly enjoyed your translation, primarily because you have kept translation as literal as possible The book is a jewel and I would recommend every student of the the French language to buy this book in a heartbeat However, Jennifer, I noticed one small error of oblivion on your part You forgot to translate this line on page 5 in the paragraph before last et, malgr les effort d un homme de police pour le d gager Ibrahim
