Hot Space by Queen has always been regarded as their worst album from what I can remember. The introduction of more modern trends (at least for 1982) changed the bands sound from the hard rock and heavy metal of the '70s and took the band into more stream lined territory. But is it really that bad? After all, bands have to expand their sound.

I will never criticise a band for trying something new as long as it sounds good and for the most part, Hot Space does sound great. The album kicks off with the funk influenced Staying Power. This song has a great rhythm and really demonstrates John Deacon's skills as a bass player. I love this song, it is different and quite quirky for Queen. It leads off into the more art rock, Dancer. Another great song on the album that often gets over looked by fans. It has a steady driving beat with some nice heavy guitar chords blaring over the top of it. The chorus is a great sing a long and is easily one of the most over looked songs from this era of Queen. At this point, Hot Space goes into a steep decline. Back Chat is a good enough song. It isn't quite as fun as the last two but is far from bad.

Body Language and Action This Day is a whole different story altogether. There is something about these two songs that just doesn't sound right. They sound very artificial, stripped back and extremely bland. Despite the kick ass bass runs and the catchy melody, the songs structures don't really go anywhere and they do a great job of killing the albums opening momentum. Thankfully things pick up on the second half of the album with songs like the anthemic, Put Out The Fire. This song sounds very similar to the kind of loud rock songs that made Brian Adams famous. Life Is Real is a decent but uneventful ballad that leads into the Tom Petty-esque, Calling All Girls. This is a great little rock song, I never understood why this one never gets a mention. Las Palabras De Amor is another typical Queen ballad. Thankfully this one remembers to be interesting. It has a nice up beat rhythm and a big chorus, the kind of stuff Queen fans love. Another uneventful song, Cool Cat leads into the all time classic, Under Pressure. A nice little pop rock song that features Freddie Mercury duetting with the legendary David Bowie. It is a fine lighthearted way to finish an otherwise up beat album.

If you removed the fillers from this record, you would get an easy thirty minutes of great music. My personal belief is that Queen tried something new and I respect them for that but they could have done with a little quality control. There is a lot of great material on Hot Space to warrant a purchase but as a fan, I would have been happier with a shorter album rather then have the record padded with filler material.

Hot Space is definitely not as bad as a lot of Queen fans make it out to be. Sure it has its disco beats and an abundance of synthesizers but the melodies, chorus and musicianship is there. It is a very well produced album, sounds magnificent by today's standards and I believe you should give it a chance. As reassurance, at least it doesn't have Mustapha on it.
