Interesting English mystery with a touch of history repeating itself, Just enough mystery to keep you on your toes while trying to solve it in the first half. Also lots of information on art restoration.

Liked the history part of this book, but the main mystery is so unevenly written that it was a struggle to finish.
The heroine has almost no impact on the 'solution' of the mystery and spends most of the book unaware of all the plotting and intrigue going on around her.

So much information we are given, concerning the mystery is stuff we learn that the heroine isn't ever told. The cast is mostly unlikable and one of the few sympathetic ends up being a victim of the killer.

The reveal of what's behind the mystery pictures was very clever, and how it effected one of the people after them was amusing, but by the time it happened I was pretty numb and just skimming to get to the end. So much so that I wasn't even cheered up by the fact that I guessed who the murderer was.

The heroine's knowledge of art restoration and history was interesting, but she such a weak character that it was hard to root for her.
Liked her sidekick, but he hardly does anything.

If this was the first book in a series, I could forgive some of it's flaws, but I'm told there were a couple before it and I have no interest in tracking thewm down and giving this series another try.

The Victorian history and art restoration aspects were intriguing as always, but the main mystery just fell flat for me.
