The Stubborn Dead drops us right into the action as protagonist Rachel Miller attempts to release a spirit from the Earth realm The entity appears to be a woman and she violently resists Rachel s plea for her to crossover Rachel draws upon symbols on her arms calling forth spirits that help her trap the entity Despite its violence, she asks the spirits to be gentle Rachel is thrust against a wall, as the spirits wrap themselves around the female entity One of them lingers back and Rachel yells, I m OK, she needs you then I do GO This novella while only twenty thousand words grabbed me from page one and never let go This looks to be a great introduction to a fantastic urban fantasy series.Rachel is a member of the Order of Rescue Mediums and must live by their rules or have her supernatural abilities bound When Rachel arrives at the home of her new client, Sylvia Elkeles s, she finds a wrath Once she has engaged it, she realizes something is terribly wrong Now she has forty eight hours to mercifully release the wrath or deal with the consequences I really like Rachel she is a strong protagonist who takes her job seriously She is a supernatural hunter who calls on powers of the order to cross spirits over She uses enchanted weapons and incantations As if that s not enough of a tough job, she has to deal with a client who is keeping a secret and a mob boss who wants her on his team Hoar does just enough world building to tantalize us and set us up for book two.The Stubborn Dead is the first book in the Lost Souls series and I can t wait to see what Hoar has in store This has the potential to be a new favorite urban fantasy series for me I highly recommend this read to fans of urban fantasy, ghosts, detectives and the supernatural fans of the TV series Supernatural, pay particular attention to the dedication I want to thank netGalley and Carina Press for providing me with this ARC in exchange for my unbiased review.

4 sRachel Miller is a Rescue Medium working for the Order of Rescue Mediums, who sends aggressive, disembodied spirits back to where they belong with the use of her tattooed sigils that hold the power of 5 presences who help transfer the spirit from this plane It s dangerous, she is always being attacked and knocked about but someone has to do it When she receives a phone call from a new client about one particularly aggressive wraith her life is turned upside down and her power is tested as she is forced to go up against a long thought extinct supernatural With her job and powers on the line and a 48hour time limit, can she do it I really enjoyed this, I like the idea of a rescue medium and what she does although it s basically an exorcist Rachel seems like a great character, quite determined, I feel we have only just touched on her though with this being a short book I was really interested in the plot which had a lot of deception, betrayal, greed, mystery and suspense The action never stopped as Rachel tried to work out how to save the Rodach as well as her job and her powers making this a fast paced ride with a darker supernatural feel There were also another couple of plot lines I was really interested in, they were touched upon but maybe they are for the bigger, whole series plot Mr Grey the surveillance man and the company he works for has really piqued my curiosity also Janus mafia boss, he wants something from Rachel and I need to know what lengths he will go to, to get it, plus her mother thinks he is trying to court her and he s fae so I can t wait to see how that unfolds. So, yeah A really good start to a new series that I would like a whole lot of because this book was way too short But, saying that It made an impact and I ll definitely be looking out for the sequel.

The Stubborn Dead by Natasha Hoar is every bit as good as the teaser in the January print RT Book Reviews claimed it to be At just under 60 pages, the whole book is a teaser, and a damn fine one.Rachel Miller is the resident member of the Order of Rescue Mediums in Vancouver Her duty is to release trapped spirits from this earthly realm Not all spirits want to be released, and sometimes Rachel has a supernatural fight on her hands Occasionally, that fight manifests physically, and the spirit shoves Rachel into a wall Lucky for Rachel, being a rescue medium means that she heals quickly.Being summoned to a haunted house to exorcise a trapped spirit is all part and parcel of Rachel s life The local priests even know who Rachel is, because she handles the spirits who are beyond their powers. So when Rachel gets a call from Sylvia Elkeles asking her to remove a spirit that s already sent the local Catholic priest to the hospital, Rachel is concerned, but still comes to the house Even after she calls the diocese and discovers that Father Simon is not only not in the hospital, but has never heard of Sylvia.Rachel is not prepared enough for the lying, cheating, sociopathic Sylvia Because Sylvia has studied up on rescued mediums, and uses the code that binds Rachel s power into supernaturally forcing her to dealing with a special kind of stubborn undead A rodach A wraith who is still tied to his living body and still has a soul.Rachel has 48 hours to either find the rodach s body or eliminate his soul And if she fails, her supernatural powers will be bound, forever. While the clock is ticking, Rachel has her own personal issues to deal with Her perpetual stalker, Janus Ostara Janus is a mob boss But not of the usual kind of mob Janus mob only contains members of the supernatural, and he wants to add Rachel to his crew, personally.Meanwhile, about that rodachthey re supposed to be extinct Which means that information on dealing with the problem appropriately is limited in the extreme And that clock keeps ticking awayEscape Rating B This is one of those cases where my biggest complaint is that the book was way too damn short I want to know about these rescue mediums and the world that requires their services If you re an urban fantasy fan, just about the time you get really sucked in, it s over. The story itself wraps up very, very well It s just that I want of the worldbuilding I want it bad The second book, titled The Ravenous Dead, is out on submission according to the author s site I really want a publisher Carina, hopefully to pick this up Like yesterday.

Book Review originally published here book drops us right into the middle of the story The action picks up from the start, and the book turned out to be a lot fun than I thought it would be Rachel is an intriguing protagonist She has a great sense of humor, and she s pretty awesome at what she does The entire worldbuilding of this book was great, including the Order of Rescue Mediums, and the lore behind that.

Very short read but had a lot packed in such a small story It was alright It kept reminding me of Shade by Jeri Smith Ready with the way that wraiths were known to react I liked Shade much better than this one though because of the additional back story and world building included in the longer novel I think I would have enjoyed this one if it would have been a lot fleshed out.

3.5 very interesting start though I wish it had been longer.

Short but Substantial Series DebutHindsight being what it is, Rachel Miller should have climbed right back on her motorcycle and ridden away as soon as she sawand feltthe charming house she d been called to clear of a dangerous spirit The waves of rage and pain that emanate from the house jar every cell in her body She had dealt with aggressive spirits before, though, and had plenty of experience in her job with the Order of Rescue Mediums A wraith is nasty, but doable Metaphysically speaking, at least. When she engages the nasty spirit, trying to release it from the home, it doesn t respond like any other wraith Rachel has ever seen or heard of before, drawing into question just what, exactly, she is dealing with If it s not a wraith, she has no idea what it is, and successfully releasing it just got a whole lot closer to impossible. She can t just walk away, no harm, no foul, either Once she actively engages a spirit, she is bound to follow through until either it s gone or she s dead If she doesn t, she s kicked out of the Order, the repercussions of that so severe that dying by not wraith may actually be preferable. As if her situation isn t dire enough, she s got a supernatural mob boss all up in her business and her client is mixed up in something so threatening it forces Rachel to look over her own shoulder She s definitely had easier jobs If she can t get rid of whatever is in that house with the oh so bad vibes, though, she won t ever have another It s hard for me to believe, but with only about 20,000 words, Hoar created a totally satisfying, thoroughly entertaining urban fantasy series debut that rocked my world I didn t even know that was possible I m sure part of my appreciation lies in my love for hauntings, ghosts, ghost busters, ghost investigations, et al., but without Hoar s deft and comprehensive storytelling ability, this very short but lovely story would have still fallen flat. There isn t a significant amount of expansive world building, or pages of exposition to set up the story and the characters, but as it turns out, Hoar didn t need it to kick her story off and make her main character, Rachel, believable and sympathetic I enjoyed her Her quick witted, sardonic, take no prisoners personality is really right up my alley.Combining that likable character with a main plotline that has depth and you have a story with teeth and enough layers to keep me coming back for , unsure what to expect next but happy to find out The building blocks for the future of the series were laid well, right alongside a fully realized story conflict with enough closure to make the novella feel complete And okay, it s true, I sort of had an instant if perhaps unwise attraction to supernatural mob boss Janus Maybe there s something wrong with me, but I swear, I adored the tension between him and Rachel. There s no romance in this short novella, per se, but if the series is heading that way, I hope it includes Janus Call me a romantic, but even the possibility of him redeeming himself because of his feelings for Rachel flips my switch I m a total sucker for a redeemable bad boy.At this length, there isn t room for sweeping, epic plot and a wide diversity of characters Hoar kept her tale conservative in that regard, careful not to overextend herself That being said, she definitely made the most out of what space she had and maximized every word that went into it I was engaged and entertained from word one I love that about this story Disclosure An ARC of this book was provided by publisher Carina Press via NetGalley This rating, review, and all included thoughts and comments are my own. Reviewed for One Good Book Deserves Another.

I just reviewed this on my blog a few hours ago.To view the full review, click here Lost Souls Book 1 The Stubborn Dead By Natasha Hoar I know what I read is an ARC, but I m wondering if the formatting is going to be edited since it doesn t look right. This is the first book to the Lost Souls series by Natasha Hoar, it seems like a good start to a great series I can t wait for the next one, but since this book isn t going to be released until the 23rd, then I have a long way to wait until book 2, I hope it s longer though. It s a fast paced story with a lot going on, and many interesting characters introduced.A few of the things that I loved about this book was the plot idea, whichever it is I love the paranormal, and I haven t read a story that is mostly about ghosts in a long time It s one of the things that caught my interest to read this book True, a world of supernaturals isn t new, we ve seen it in many other series as well, but, like others, this one has a few unique things that make it different, like rodachs, I ve never read about them before, I think she might have made them up, because when I searched about them on google, I couldn t find anything except a few places in Germany. This book was confusing to understand at some parts, and I think that might have been my fault, since I was reading some pages when I was really tired, so it was a bit hard for me to focus on what was going on or it could be something else. The story starts with Rachel Miller the protagonist , who s a rescue medium never heard of those before, except for just mediums , in the middle of a fight between an old lady who s a spirit and who won t go away. There are too many things going on in this novella, while I was reading this book, I kept thinking that this should be a prequel like book 0.5 to the series, instead of book 1, but that s just my opinion Too many characters being introduced for a novel this short, which left a lot of questions unanswered Although, despite this, I still liked some of the main characters.I liked Rachel Miller, she s stubborn like me, at least I think she s stubborn , smart, brave, kind, knows how to deal with b es If you re looking for a romance novel, then this is not it But, if you re looking for a short urban fantasy novel to read, then this might be the book for you.As I ve said before, this book could have been a full length novel with a little work It would ve been better and enjoyable if it was longer. It was hard to rate this book, I ended up rating this book 3.5 stars, but since I didn t make any half stars pictures, I m going give this book 4 stars, it was close to 4 stars. This review is longer than I thought it would be.

This was a short, but brilliant, novella that I ultimately fell in love with from the very first page It was a good starting novel to what could be a very interesting and fascinating new series It was a nice, easy read that was entertaining and welcoming and one book that I simply found difficult to put down I enjoyed reading the journey that the main protagonist took and am extremely excited to wait for the next instalment to find out exactly what is in store for her The characters in this novella were well drawn out and seemed realistic and heart warming Considering this was a short piece of writing, that, in itself, is a remarkable aspect of the story and really made the reading process that much nicer I really liked Rachel and the way that she behaves throughout the story I also liked Janus and his relationship with Rachel and cannot wait to witness how this will eventually turn out I also really connected with Kit, I thought that he was a really well written character who had a lot of baggage to deal with and yet, at the same time, he was an outstanding moral citizen on the outside I just loved that he wasn t all what he seemed. The supernatural elements of this novella was really what captured my heart I loved reading about the different beings that exist within the story s world and I am interested in finding out a lot about them I enjoyed spotting where some of the references within the novella came from and this always put a smile on my face as I read through it I feel that this elements could have been described a little bit to give the novella a bit flesh but, at the same time, it did still work without them. This story starts with the protagonist in the middle of getting rid of a spirit that is attached to a house and I found that this was an interesting and brilliant way to start the story as it through the reader straight in to the action while also learning about Rachel and the way she lives I liked that all the information wasn t just thrown at you at once but spread out across the story and I just really enjoyed the entire plot and how it was all put together It is a lovely story that is easy and enjoyable to read.I received this novella for review from Cedar Press from Netgalley and I am incredibly glad that I was given the opportunity to read this novella as it was one that I really enjoyed This novella will be released today and I would recommend it to anyone that wants a quick, easy read and who enjoys all aspects of supernatural stories This is an adult story that can be enjoyed by readers from teens to their nineties.
